What communities learn

Skills for safer time in the water.

Training is designed for freedivers of all backgrounds and experience levels. It focuses on changing conditions, safe breath-hold practices, good decisions, and actively looking after the person diving beside you.

01

Blackout prevention

Understand how hypoxia develops, why blackout can happen without warning, and which behaviours increase risk.

  • Safe breathing and recovery breathing
  • Warning signs of loss of motor control
  • Why hyperventilation and pushing limits are dangerous
02

Active buddying

Learn how to supervise a dive instead of simply entering the water with another person.

  • One diver down, one buddy watching
  • Meet the diver during ascent
  • Monitor the diver after surfacing
03

Rescue & response

Practise a clear response to loss of motor control, blackout, or another in-water emergency.

  • Protect and support the airway
  • Bring the diver to the surface safely
  • Signal for help and begin the trained response
04

Conditions & preparation

Assess the environment, the team, and available support before deciding whether and where to dive.

  • Weather, swell, tide, current, and visibility
  • Entry, exit, distance, and return time
  • Communication, flotation, signalling, and emergency access
Freediving safety training in the water

Why we exist

Every diver deserves the skills to return safely.

Across island nations, people enter the ocean to provide. A hidden hypoxic blackout, an unexpected current, or a missed change in weather can turn a familiar dive into an emergency. Island Style partners with communities to make prevention, supervision, and rescue part of the way every generation dives.
